NSN Annual Meeting – Tuesday 4 November at Birchouse Farm in Manchester

The Northern Soils Network (NSN) is holding their Annual Meeting at Birchouse Farm on Tuesday 4 November, which is open to members and non-members. The event will include: talks in the farmhouse, tour of the paludiculture trials and other experiments, peat probing and coring to explore variation in depth and nature of the peat at the site.

We will have a few speakers throughout the day:

  • Andrew Osborne, PhD student at Manchester Metropolitan University, will present his research on Chat Moss peatland and habitat extent; 
  • Dr Jonathan Lageard, Senior Lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University, will talk about paleoecology and social history of Chat Moss;
  • Dr Chris Field, Senior Lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University, will speak on land use, carbon emissions and transitioning agricultural peatlands and paludiculture
  • Dr Paul Thomas, Senior Officer of Peat and Wetland at Natural England, will be speak about the work that has been done on Moss Side Farm

Provisional timetable:

  • 09:30 -10:00 - Arrival
  • 10:00 - 12pm - Presentations 
  • 12:00-13:00 - Lunch
  • 13:00-17:00 - Tour of the sites
